The Last Leg

You guys I can't believe I'm about to say this but... It's race eve.

Tomorrow, I run a half marathon.

That's still sinking in.

This journey - It's started and re-started so many times I've lost count. This time with the help of some expert medical professionals, a lot of boring hours doing PT exercises, and a painfully slow build, I'm finally finally here.

This past week, less continued to be more, as the ten mile run I did last Sunday left me with swollen sore knees for a solid two days. I slept in. I did yoga. I foam rolled. I sat in the hot tub. Thursday I got back on my feet for a short 2 mile run. Heck, the fact that I can even classify two miles as "short" is amazing to me. In any case, I felt good.

We had a blast at the expo with the kids on Friday night. It was my first experience with the race expo and it did not disappoint. These are memories I will surely cherish!

Today we got up ridiculously early to be downtown for the 5k. My normal Galloway buddy wasn't able to make it and Joe was chasing the clock. I wanted to just take my time and enjoy the experience. Read: DO NOT GET INJURED. I ran with a new friend who has been giving me advice and suggestions throughout my training in the past few months. I was nervous because I've never run without walk breaks. With good conversation and an easy pace I had zero (seriously: ZERO) trouble keeping up and never felt the need for a walk break! Looking at the tech side, my heart rate never entered anaerobic and my mechanics measured by the Lumo were all stellar - far far better than I've ever seen on any other run. This leads me to believe that perhaps all this time I've been running too fast...

But the plan for tomorrow stands: Run 3 minutes, walk 30 seconds. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat, etc.

After the race we waited on the course for Cami and my sister to come by so we could cheer her on. She was pretty unenthusiastic and Mel said basically she had to drag her through the course, but at the end Cami was excited to get a medal and she speaks highly of her experience. She repeatedly told us that she wants to run an OCR next time not a "regular race". That's my girl :)

Following that, we milled about on The Point taking in the festivities, then we walked the connector across the river back to the North Shore to get our car. We had lunch at Cracker Barrel and said goodbye to Aunt Mel. Joe and I took naps in the early afternoon and then I hit the hot tub for a bit with the kids. After a shower, we packed up and headed downtown. Initially we wanted to meet up with a friend who is in from out of town but the road closures and high priced parking proved to be insurmountable, so we came to the hotel and ordered room service.

My nutrition today has been a bit less than stellar but I avoided things that could make me sick. It's 9:30 and I'm about ready to hit the sack.

Tomorrow has been a long time coming and it starts very very early. Thanks for sharing in the journey.
